I had an idea for a little blog series! Me and my friend(s) plan on watching a variety of Christmas movies, so I'm going to make a little write-up about each. Hopefully we can get through our list before the 25th. On this occasion I was joined not only by Dirk, but our friend Kyle, too!
Here's the list!
Arthur Christmas
Love Actually
A Year Without Santa Claus
The Muppet Christmas Carol
It's a Wonderful Life
Black Christmas
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Klaus
Gremlins
I didn't expect very much from this movie; it looked like any other shitty animated movie from the 2010s, like Hop or something. Being called "Arthur Christmas" doesn't help its case. I was wholly hesitant at the contribution to our watchlist until Dirk noted: "Hugh Laurie's in it."
Okay.
To my delight, this movie was actually really fun. It follows all the beats of any other Christmas movie, but it works! The high-tech display of how Christmas could practically be handled was fun and novel, and the characters are so earnestly heartfelt. For example: while the main antagonist is sometimes cold, there's luckily no villain twist with him. He's still part of the family, doing his best.
FAVORITE CHARACTERS:
Grandsanta
He's the funniest character, I think. He had to handle Christmas 1941 during WWII with 6 reindeer and 1 drunk elf. His sleigh sustained three direct shots and the elf fell into Lake Geneva (never to be seen again.) He's always wearing that made-of-sterner-stuff old guy persona, including mistreatment of his workers and elf racism. I wish there was a spinoff movie about his run as Santa.
Bryony
Wrapping expert. I didn't know there were lesbian Christmas elves, but it's true. Look at her! She even has an eyebrow piercing.
Kind of an underwhelming first entry, but there's not much to be said. Worth watching! Hugh Laurie plays Steve Claus.
Entry #1 of my Christmas Watchathon
Arthur Christmas: 4/5
Fun fact, this is the first animated movie I'm watching since August, when I watched Despicable Me 4.
